Harold Ramis was hired to direct, wanted Alec Baldwin, considered Steve Martin and Kevin Kline, and quit when the studio cast a sitcom star. The main villain is named after the film critic Andrew Sarris — "As long as they spelled my name right, I'm okay." A catchphrase invoking a god's hammer was a placeholder the writer meant to replace, until the crew started printing it on T-shirts. Rainn Wilson and Justin Long make their film debuts; Paul Rudd auditioned.
