Coming straight off The Hunchback of Notre Dame, its directors decided the last thing they wanted to make was another musical, and pitched a Jules Verne–style adventure instead — no songs at all. They handed the look to comic artist Mike Mignola as production designer, which is why a film from that studio suddenly has hard black outlines, and shot it anamorphic, which almost none of the studio's traditionally animated features were.
