John Hughes conceived it — as "two dumb guys in Aspen", under the title Ski Nuts — sold it on and had his name taken off. The directors had never heard of their star; they were told he was "the white guy on In Living Color". A hundred actors passed on the lead, and Nicolas Cage was going to be the co-lead until he asked for another $2 million. The star got $7 million and his partner about $50,000 — a figure the studio set low on purpose, hoping he'd walk.
