Its writers set out to make something as unlike their debut — a bleak Texas noir — as possible, and built the characters' dialect out of what they figured the characters read: magazines and the Bible. The lead offered suggestions on set and had them all ignored — "They have an autocratic nature." The director said of the man who plays the bounty hunter that he was "less an actor than a force of nature… I don't know if I'd rush headlong into employing him".
