It exists because its director found an empty Eno's fruit-salts bottle on a Turkish beach in 1976. Rupert Murdoch and Robert Stigwood formed a company to fund it — the only film that company ever made; Murdoch's father had been the war correspondent whose despatches from that same beach turned Australia against the British command. The farewell ball wasn't in the script; the director added it mid-shoot for an extra $60,000.
