    George Lucas was going to direct it in 1971 as a $2 million black comedy shot on 16mm in South Vietnam while the war was still on. Steve McQueen, Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood and Robert De Niro all turned down the lead rather than leave America for months; Orson Welles and Lee Marvin passed on the other role. The title came from a hippie badge reading "Nirvana Now".
