Vince Vaughn passed on the lead as too old; Mark Wahlberg wanted to play it with a lisp; Jason Schwartzman had it, then dropped out a month before cameras rolled. The director credits Christopher Nolan and his wife with landing it a distributor after a private screening, and with suggesting the on-screen date cards.
