Its writer-director says the note that came down from the studio was four words: "This is too gay." He didn't pull back. It was written as a riff on Ed Wood's 1953 film Glen or Glenda, and sat unmade from October 1998 — two days after the previous film in the series opened — until Focus Features picked it up on the back of Cabin Fever making money. Then it was shot almost entirely in Romania, to save money.
