The script was called Okavango and sat in development at the studio for years. Its writer buried himself in research on the diamond trade on the working assumption that the industry would come after him — he expected to be sued, so he made sure every claim in it would stand up in court. Then the lead was offered to David Hasselhoff, who read it and turned it down because he did not like where the character went.
