American judges cannot leave it alone. Richard Posner praised its cross-examination technique. Antonin Scalia cited it for the principle that a defendant picks his own lawyer. One federal judge published a paper arguing it had anticipated a 1999 Supreme Court ruling on expert witnesses. And in 2019 the chief judge of a federal appeals court opened an opinion by observing that a fictional attorney had, in 1992, taught a master class in cross-examination — then quoted the scene at length.
