Greenlit in March 1993 under the working title "Snowballs". Its background painters worked in oil rather than gouache to get the texture of snow right, and it was the first theatrical feature finished on the Toonz digital ink-and-paint system. It was drawn in a converted factory in Acton, west London, by a crew of 250 from fifteen nations — and it was the last thing made there. When the studio folded in 1997 the whole staff went to DreamWorks, taking an unfinished Shrek! with them.
