The answer
The movie was Dead Poets Society (1989).
- A 1989 coming-of-age drama set in 1959 at a fictional elite New England boarding school, where tradition, discipline and rigid parental expectation govern everything. Directed by Peter Weir.
- The screenplay is semi-autobiographical: the writer modelled the school on his own Nashville prep school and the teacher on one of his real teachers there. It won Best Original Screenplay.
- Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard play two of the students, both very early in their careers.
- The students revive a long-defunct secret club, sneaking off school grounds to read poetry aloud by candlelight in a cave.
- "Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary." — the English teacher, played by Robin Williams.
